A bit of History
The primary source of income for the town was the production of cotton thread. The mills, which were powered by the Black Cart Water to the north of Johnstone, included a six-storey cotton mill that was constructed in 1782.
If you’re interested in learning about the town’s past, you should definitely visit the fantastic Johnstone History Museum. You can find the museum inside Morrison’s supermarket. It’s run by the dedicated volunteers of the Johnstone History Society and showcases historical artifacts from two well-known local companies, Wm. Paton Ltd and Clifton and Baird, along with other valuable items that highlight different aspects of the town’s heritage.

This Cycle route takes you along from Johnstone to Dunoon with a ferry trip from Gourock as well.

The bus and rail routes are excellent for exploring the area and connecting to nearby places.
